Learning a new language is one thing, but sharing it with a classroom full of enthusiastic elementary schoolers? That’s where the real magic happens!
Recently on Tuesday, October 15th, AP Spanish students at Athens High School went on an unforgettable field trip to Barnard Elementary School. Their mission was to bring the vibrant traditions, history, and joy of Hispanic Heritage Month directly to the young kids. From the moment the high schoolers stepped into the building, the hallways of Barnard were buzzing with excitement from the little children excited to see the older kids and to learn!
This day was packed with many activities in order to teach the Elementary students about Hispanic Heritage month. High school students led the dynamics by showing off fun presentations, reading Spanish books, and playing many games to show off Hispanic culture.
The energy in the classrooms were filled with laughter and joy. “It was so amazing to see how excited the kids were to learn from us,” shared one AP Spanish student. “We had so much fun teaching as the kids did with learning.”
This field trip was more than just a fun day out of the high school building; it was a powerful bridging of our school community. The high schoolers got a chance to step up as mentors and leaders while the Barnard students gained new insight on the Hispanic world.
By the end of the day, high schoolers and elementary students left with big smiles on their faces, new friendships, and a much deeper appreciation for the rich diversity that shapes our community. Thank you to the incredible AP Spanish classes for coming to Barnard and putting a smile on the kids faces! This is a core memory that will stay in the kids hearts!
