Episode 07: Citizenship

Dr. Machesky is joined by Teagan Pruitt, TCCHS student, on this episode of Educational Leadership. In October 2023, the Troy School District embarked on an inspiring educational journey with the launch of "Portrait of a Learner" (POL), a visionary framework designed to shape the next generation of learners and leaders. At the heart of this transformative initiative is the concept of citizenship, a pivotal element among the six C's of Portrait of a Learner. This blog post explores the significance of citizenship within the POL framework, delving into how students in the Troy School District are actively embodying this principle through impactful community initiatives.

Understanding Citizenship in the Context of POL

Citizenship, as articulated in the POL framework, transcends geographic boundaries. It embodies our desire to provide a holistic approach to education, urging students to think globally and act locally. As one of the six C's, Citizenship encapsulates a commitment to community, an awareness of global issues, and a dedication to making a positive impact on both human and environmental sustainability.

The Ripple Effect of Citizenship

Through these community-driven initiatives, our students are not merely demonstrating citizenship; they are creating a ripple effect of positive change. These experiences go beyond the confines of a classroom, shaping individuals who are not just academically adept but socially conscious and responsible global citizens.

Spotlight on Troy School District's Citizenship Initiatives

In the Troy School District, Citizenship isn't just a theoretical concept—it's a lived reality. Our students actively demonstrate their commitment to their community through various initiatives that showcase their ability to give back.

  1. Clothing and Food Drives: One powerful way Troy School District students exhibit citizenship is through organizing and participating in clothing and food drives. These initiatives go beyond simply collecting items; they symbolize a collective effort to address local needs and support community members facing challenges. Boulan Park’s W.E.B. Program just completed a food drive for the OneTroy Food Pantry.  They collected over 1,000 cans and boxes as well as $1,500 in cash.

  2. Donations to Local Charities: Our students understand the importance of community organizations and local charities. Through their generosity, they contribute to the betterment of society, providing tangible support to those in need. This commitment to giving back reflects a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of the community and the role each individual plays in fostering a thriving society. Students have supported charities such as Believe in Miracles Foundation, Rainbow Connection Foundation, The Noah Project, Fleece and Thank You, and many, many, more.

  3. Donation of Time: In TSD, some of our students and classrooms invest time instead of resources as a means of giving back.  For example, instead of having Halloween classroom parties, the 3rd graders at Hill Elementary School took their costume parade to Oakmont Sterling Senior Community to bring the residents joy. Or when our Athens High School Power Lifting Team helped Focus Hope load and distribute meals in need during the holiday season.

  4. Financial Support: We are fortunate in Troy to have numerous charitable families. Our families often support different initiatives through contributions such as when Troy High’s Personal Communications Class held a Dodgeball Tournament that raised more than $14,000 for Sherriff Bouchard’s PAL Program.

  5. Emotional Support: Another way that TSD ensures belonging is through Morse’s Peer-to-Peer Program. Most recently, general education students worked with their grade-level peers with special needs to cook, sell, and eat treats in a cookie sale.  This program aims to socially connect our special education students with their peers.

Conclusion: Shaping Future Leaders through Citizenship

As we navigate the educational landscape in Troy School District, the emphasis on Citizenship within the Portrait of a Learner framework sets the stage for a generation of compassionate, globally aware leaders. The tangible acts of giving back, as highlighted in our podcast, underscore the practical application of citizenship principles in the lives of our students. Through POL, we are not just fostering academic excellence; we are nurturing well-rounded individuals who understand the significance of their role in creating a positive and sustainable future for all. The launch of "Portrait of a Learner" in October 2023 marks a significant chapter in our commitment to empowering students to be active, engaged citizens, capable of making a meaningful difference in the world.
